Our Democratic Candidates:
Mae Flexer, District 29, State Senator
Mae is a native of Killingly and graduated from Killingly High School. She was a first-generation college student, earning a degree from Quinebaug Valley Community College and then a B.A. in Political Science from UConn. She was elected to the Connecticut House in 2008, representing the 44th District, and served three terms, from 2009 through 2014. She was elected to the State Senate in 2014 and took office in January 2015, so she has now served nearly 12 years in the Senate and about 18 years altogether in the General Assembly. Mae is a leader in protecting women and survivors — she authored major laws strengthening Connecticut’s response to domestic violence, sexual assault and sexual harassment, including the Time’s Up Act and the state’s affirmative-consent standard on college campuses. She is a champion for working families — She helped advance Connecticut’s first-in-the-nation paid sick leave, paid family leave, and increases in the minimum wage. She is a strong advocate for veterans — She led legislation expanding benefits and services for veterans, including assistance for women veterans and advantages for veteran-owned small businesses; during her tenure chairing Veterans’ Affairs, 24 veterans-related bills became law.
